Famous special and with many songs written about it, Paleokastritsa is an area of unparalleled beauty.
Paleokastritsa is located a little further north from the center of the island on the west side and is about 25 kilometers away from Corfu town by road.It is not only one of the most beautiful parts of the island but also of all the Ionian Islands.

One of the most recognizable areas of Corfu magnetizes visitors with its icy, crystal clear waters, the rocky coast and the verdant hills. The water in this area is cold because it descends faster and because there are cold currents.

Paleokastritsa has been characterized as the jewel of Corfu, consisting of a series of beaches separated by small headlands. The view from the village of Lakones on the hill above Palaiokastritsa is unique.

According to historians, it was the capital of the island of Phaeacians, described by Homer in the Odyssey, when Alkinoos reigned where Nausica met Ulysses.

Historical Data

Angelokastro was the westernmost outpost of the Byzantine Empire and the Despotate of Epirus to which Corfu belonged until 1267 AD, located near the village of Krini north of Paleokastritsa next to a monastery. It was built in the early 12th century AD by the Bishop of Epirus, Duke Michael-Angelos Komnenos II, and in his prime, in case of need, it could protect the entire population of the area, that is about 4000 people.

Inside the castle, there are two large water tanks and the churches of Saint Archangels and Saint Kyriaki. The church of the Archangels was built in 1784 at the site of an older church.

Saint Kyriaki is built in a small cave and has 18th century paintings.

Angelokastro had many sieges, but it never fell, except once, to the Venetians after a six-month siege in 1386.In 1537 the only 8 soldiers of his garrison with the help of the inhabitants managed to repel the attack of Barbarossa.

The Turks tried again and again failed to conquer the Castle in 1571.

The villages around were named after the soldiers of the Byzantine period who took pieces of land to settle here when their service ended. Examples of names are: Makrides in the village of Makrades, Vistonas in Vistonas, Dukes in Doukades, Aspiotes in Aspiotades, Kavadias in Kavadades etc.

Today the castle is still standing on top of the cliff and is a powerful tourist attraction, a well-preserved part of the history of this enchanting island.
