Gastouri, Achilleion, Corfu, Rent a car Achilleion
In a beautiful landscape, there is the absolutely traditional village called Gastouri.
It is built on the slopes of a green hill about 9 kilometers northeast of Corfu town.
At the top of the hill stands the Achilles built for the Empress of Austria Elizabeth, the famous Sisi, in 1890-1891, by the Italian architect Kapita. The Empress was very fond of the Homeric hero Achilles, so she named her palace after him.
The neoclassical building is surrounded by beautiful gardens. On the back is the statue of the “Dying Achilles”, created by the German sculptor Herter. Some of Elizabeth’s personal effects are kept on the lower floor of the palace.
After her murder, Achilles was bought by Kaiser William II of Germany.

Achilleion
It’s in the Pompeian style mansion. In the interior, there are frescoes and decorations of important artists of the time of its construction, while on the second floor there is an Ionic peristyle. Around the palace are rich lush gardens, overlooking the North and South. The walls are full of brightly colored bougainvilleas and palm trees are rising everywhere. The gardens are adorned by many statues, mainly of Achilles, a beloved hero of the Empress, from whom the palace took its name. The Dying Achilles is a nice bronze statue, the work of the German sculptor Ernst Herter. Perhaps Elizabeth of Austria was moved by this statue and bought it after the tragic suicide of her second son, Archduke Rodolfo, in Myerling. A second impressive statue of Achilles, 15m tall, was commissioned by Kaiser William II.
Achilleion can be visited at certain times of the day.
Kastelanoi village near Achilleion in Middle Corfu
Graphic village of Middle Corfu, at a surveillance point of the area, 11 km southwest of the city, at an altitude of 160 m. A settlement refers to sources already in the year 1381. The name of the village is much said. According to one version, the name came from the word “castelo”, which means fortress. A version related to the installation of a guard of Byzantine soldiers, who created a fortress that evolved into a settlement. According to another version, the name came from the relative word castellania (guard), without creating any fortress.
However, the prevailing version is that the name of the village is due to the surname Kastellanos (which came from the post of castellanos, that is, castle guardian), which is found in notary acts of the 15th century. Specifically, according to Spyros Asonitis, the year 1446 is mentioned as the vineyard owners Michael Castellanos selected Mazarakis and Stamatios Castellanos. In the census of the year 1583 the village had 160 inhabitants, in 1766 it is mentioned with 352 inhabitants, in 1879, it had reached 838 inhabitants and in 2001 it had 553 inhabitants.
